UPDATE:
January 21, 2012
(Read the "backstory" below this update.)
Great News about
Fozzy Bear!
Fozzy Bear is continuing to improve. Vet tech Lisa at Oak
Bay Animal Hospital was thrilled with how well he is
gaining weight and Dr. Snelgrove gave him another
shot and took a skin scraping which determined that Fozzy
Bear is MITE FREE. YEAH!! He still needs our help
though. There is a risk of secondary skin infection so he
will be on antibiotics for month. All of this care costs
money so we are still asking for donations. A check of
any amount sent to HSJC WA - P.O. Box 845, Port
Hadlock, WA 98339 would be greatly appreciated.
Or, as the roads clear, stop by Bonita's Four
Legged Friends and donate to the Fozzy Bear food fund.
Craig has graciously offered to collect donations towards
'Taste of the Wild Salmon' food, a high quality high
protein food. Or, follow the lead of a wonderful woman
who stopped by the shelter with a small bag for Fozzy
last week, all the way from Puyallup! Thank you so
much for your continued support of Fozzy Bear and all the
animals at the Jefferson County Humane Society Animal
Shelter.

URGENT:
January 5, 2012
Please help fulfill the New Year’s wish of
a lost soul. Late December a young dog was found wandering
the cold streets and brought to The Humane Society of
Jefferson County. This poor boy was in horrible shape,
starving and underweight with bald dry skin covered in
scabs. It is hard to believe that someone neglected their
pet and let his condition get so out of control, and then
let him loose to fend for himself. His future wasn’t
looking so bright for the New Year.

The Chocolate Lab was taken to Oak Bay
Animal Hospital. The kind staff ignored his terrible stench
and focused on the soul that drives his wagging tail. As
though laughing the pain away he was named Fozzy Bear.
Fozzy Bear is diagnosed with Sarcoptic Mange which is
highly contagious to humans and pets. Sarcoptic Mange is
caused by a tiny burrowing mite. The mites tunnel in the
upper layers of the skin which causes an intense
inflammatory reaction. All dogs have these mites on their
hair follicles but when stressed, not fed properly or
mistreated these mites go to work and cause breakouts.

Oak Bay Animal gave Fozzy an Ivermectin
shot and sent him to the shelter with prescription shampoo.
Volunteers bathed Fozzy Bear on Christmas Day and even
though his skin was sensitive to the touch Fozzy wiggled
and wagged in the tub.
Unfortunately Fozzy Bear cannot receive visitors at this
time as he is still contagious. The shelter staff is
socializing with Fozzy and he rang in the New Year
surrounded by compassionate and loving strangers. Fozzy has
also started to learn to calm down, sit and wait for his
meals. Fozzy has received a second shot and continues his
baths. His skin is not as inflamed and he has gained eight
pounds but he has a long road ahead to recover.
Fozzy will require more visits to the vet, medication,
baths, food and clean bedding which cannot be reused.
Please contribute to Fozzy Bear’s New Year’s resolution of
living pain free by donating in his name. Craig, of
Bonita’s Four-Legged Friends, has volunteered to collect
donations for Fozzy Bear’s food and treats. Craig has
suggested Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Smoked Salmon to
aid in Fozzy’s recovery.
Or send contributions to The Humane Society of Jefferson
County,
P.O. Box 845 Port Hadlock, WA 98339 or drop off
contributions or clean bedding at the shelter, 112 Critter
Lane, 12-5pm Tuesday through Saturday.
Thank you for helping those who cannot help themselves.

HERE'S OUR "SPECIAL RESCUE" KITTY:
SORBET
UPDATE:
Excerpt from an email forwarded
by our friends at R.E.D. (Rescue Every Dog) who helped
Sorbet find her new family:
Dear Tiami and RED,
We would like to thank you again for
giving us the opportunity to adopt, love, and make Sorbet
part of our family, and a huge thanks to all those who
spent countless hours, and for the donations to help this
little girl. She wouldn’t be here without you! She is
absolutely adorable and had a great first couple of nights
here. She now has a friend, Murphy, who is a little scared
of her but getting closer to her all the time. ... The
first day she was rather shy, but as of this morning she is
the aggressor wanting to play with him. Hiding under things
and jumping out when he walks by. She has been purring
since a few minutes after getting here which makes me feel
good! ...
Someone told me yesterday how lucky this
little Gal was to have us.. she’s not the lucky one...We
are.

Here's the original
"backstory",
from Paul Becker, one of our founders:
"Here is a photo of a cat (we
named Sorbet) that was just turned in to the shelter as a
stray. It looked so bad that I took it to Hadlock Vet -
(Dr. Ginny Johnson, our hero!) - the same
afternoon to see what was wrong with it and would it be
communicable to our other felines.
"The ears are stiff as cardboard and the nose and all
around the eyes were black and the cat was very, very thin.
They put the cat ( an unspayed female) on an IV drip to put
fluids in her due to dehydration. Upon examination, the
staff, who had practiced in Alaska, took one look at her
and said it was a classic case of frost bite. We have
no idea how this could occur unless it was induced by
persons unknown.
"Sorbet has a wonderful, outgoing personality and is very
docile and loving. We have received contributions to help
pay for her medical care and are sure she will recover
completely and will be available for adoption in a few
weeks."
Contributions to help with medical expenses for
Sorbet and other Shelter animals can be sent to the Humane
Society of Jefferson County WA, PO Box 845, Port Hadlock,
WA 98339.

WE'VE RECEIVED OUR FIRST DONATION FROM THE
WONDERFUL WRITERS AND PRODUCERS OF
"CLAWLESS"
A SOAP OPURRA FOR CATS
Click on the image, below, and
visit their very entertaining website. BUY THE BOOK for
yourself or someone you know. Thank you to these folks for
making the Humane Society of Jefferson County one of the
recipients of their generous gifts to the animals.
Rumor has it that we will soon be able to announce a
Port Townsend appearance and reading by Ann
Scarborough, one of the authors. Stay tuned.
Thanks to Vicki Thorne-Ohly
of Pooches in Port Hadlock for generously
donating her salon and services to a litter of abandoned
puppies. The little pups were covered in filth and ?. She
had to comb each dog, as whatever was embedded in the
fur was not budging.
A concerned citizen called the animal shelter when they
found the starving mother, almost bald due to
flea infestation, and the ragged pups. The dogs are
all safely on the road to recovery and will be available
for adoption when they are older and feeling better.

Note from HSJC co-founder, Paul
Becker:
"Can you put this picture on the web page? Catherine
White brought this gift of blankets and pillows hand made
by Norma Sebert of Madison, Wi. They are beautiful and the
cats love them. All the cats want to thank Norma for her
skill and her generosity in giving them such a wonderful
place to nap."
Of course we can, Paul! That's Jenny Haynes, Shelter and
HSJC Staff person, holding the blankets Norma Sebert made
and standing next to Catherine White, Shelter Volunteer,
who picked up the blankets during a vacation trip to
Wisconsin.
